What has been your favorite part of your Adelphi experience so far?

My favorite part about my experience at Adelphi is without a doubt, the people I have met and the community we have built with each other. This includes peers, alumni, and professors. I'm so grateful to be surrounded by like-minded souls who challenge me and push me to be the best version of myself. The people I have met here inspire me with their drive and kind hearts. The relationships I have made here are ones that I will keep, even beyond Adelphi.

Why did you choose your major?

I chose to study Acting/Theatre at Adelphi because my passion is telling stories through art, and theatre is the best way I know how. Theatre is not a presentation, but an experience for those on stage and for those in the audience. It is live, and it is transformative, and that is the world I choose to be a part of.

What are you most looking forward to after graduating from Adelphi?

I am most looking forward to starting working in the field I've been studying at Adelphi; this includes a lot of auditioning for both theatre and film and creating/collaborating on new projects. I will be using the skills I've learned at Adelphi towards all my future work, and hope to continue working with the people I have come to know these last four years.

A note of appreciation...

To the award sponsors, donors, and friends & family of Max, Thank you so much for this scholarship. I am so very honored. I was struggling a bit these past few years to provide for myself financially for school, and this award is really going to help me get back on track. I hope to use this fund to help my career post- Graduation by paying some of the loans I have. I am very excited to continue doing what I love as a career, post-Graduation! While it is bittersweet to leave Adelphi, I will never be too far and as I've mentioned, will keep the connections I have made here. As I reflect, I have grown a tremendous amount, both as a person and as an artist and I have Adelphi to thank for that. I am also very thankful to Max. While I did not know him personally, his spirit, love, and kindness at Adelphi are very powerful. I hope that I can pay tribute to his memory, by continuing to immerse myself in theatre and spreading the spirit, love, and kindness everywhere I go. Once again, thank you all very much. Hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe during these times. With love, Mili

Sophia Carvalho (Class of ’22)

Major: Theatre Arts, Hometown: Hastings On Hudson, NY

Why did you choose to attend Adelphi?

I chose to attend Adelphi because the moment I arrived for my audition I felt at home. The community, the campus and the Performing Arts Center itself was so welcoming and lovely. I felt taken care of and respected. It was not about competition or proving ones self. It was about growing and being passionate about why you were here! Adelphi made me feel like I had potential, where other schools made me feel like I had to prove my worth.

Why is receiving scholarship assistance important to you?

Receiving scholarship assistance is very important to me so that I may further my focus on my acting training and studies, and not be overly concerned with tuition!

What is an achievement you are most proud of?

Although the moments I am most proud of are constantly evolving as I do, the current achievement I am most proud of is being on the Dean's List every semester of college while maintaining my position in my honors society. I am very proud of the work I do in school because I always attempt to do my best and be my most authentic and genuine self!

A note of appreciation...

I want to say an absolutely genuine thank you for this honorable mention! When I was a first year student at Adelphi I knew I wanted to be a leader, and be able to step into my own light, but I was very afraid to do so. Now as I move into my senior year here, I am able to reflect on how much this University has impacted me. I realized if others saw the light in me I should be able to as well. I am so honored to have been selected. I will always hold this with me. Thank you very very much.
